THE WINE PLEASURES WORKSHOP

Workshops have had a chequered past in Spain. No workshop event has been able to make itself a regular fixture on the wine trade’s buyer calender. But with the advent of the Wine Pleasures Workshop: Buyer meets Spanish Cellar, that may all have changed, HerbertSommer reports.

Under the stewardship of Anthony Swift – managing director of Wine Pleasures – The Wine Pleasures Workshop Buyer meets Spanish Cellar landed in 2005 in a remote Spa village located in the Conca de Barberà wine region of Spain and seemingly conjured up 40 or so boutique wineries and 50 interested buyers from around the world: relatively serious and relatively interested. Most participating wineries and buyers were generally impressed by the workshop methodology.
“From my point of view, I was very keen to that this would be a very different wine event to any other – one that attracted not only the realtively unknown boutique wineries not normally present in the larger trade fairs but also seious buyers as opposed to freeloaders that usually turn up to hosted buyer events” says Swift.

I think everyone agrees that we achieved that. Wineries were so pleased that manyhave rebooked for this year’s event. The same can be said for the particpating buyers – many have requested to attend again.

With more than 3 months to go, most of the tables have been allocated. This year we have wineries attending from more Appellations than 2006 and new ones include Cariñena, Rueda, Navarra, Riberade Guadiana and Vinos de la Tierra.
Buyer interest is also greaterthis year and more people are prepared to invest the time to travel and discover Spanish wines in this highly personalised unique event.Buyers and wineries alike had this to say about the Wine Pleasures Workshop 2005 – “The organisation of the event was first class” ...
